Key elements of Coca-Cola FEMSA’s sustainability strategy include its water and waste-water management plans, its waste reduction and recycling activities, its energy conservation initiatives, and its wide range od community development programs - from education to reforestation and natural resource conservation.

Coca-Cola FEMSA works closely with is communities on a number of initiatives that advance their economy and social well-being. Among these programs, they proactively work with the Coca-Cola Company and the Brazilian non-profit organization SOS Mata Atlântica on the Brazilian Tropical Forest Water Program. The Company also works together with the Mexican non-profit organization Pronatura, relevant governmental authorities, and the Coca-Cola Company in a major national reforestation program in Mexico. Through these 2 initiatives, Coca-Cola FEMSA will plant more than 18 million trees over a five-year period, benefiting the Jundiaí region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil - where the Company operates one of the largest facilities in the Coca-Cola system worldwide - and the communities surrounding its Mexican operations.

As a result, the Company no only preserves the forests, but also reduces the emission of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Also, through its recycling, water management and energy conservation programs, Coca-Cola FEMSA benefits its environment and its business. For example, PET recycling is a win-win proposition for the company and the society. By using more recycled PET in its bottles, the Company utilizes less energy and resources in its business, they preserve fossil fuels and they enhance the quality of its environment.

In 2008 the Toluca, Mexico, PET recycling plant—a joint venture between Coca-Cola FEMSA, The Coca-Cola Company, and ALPLA, a main supplier of PET bottles—supplied Coca-Cola FEMSA with more than 7,500 tons of recycled PET. The Company used the recycled PET in its single-serve bottles, increasing the amount if recycled resin used therein from 25 to 35%.
